The NHS continues to be top of the political agenda and with the significant increase in funding from public coffers there is intense pressure to deliver greater health outcomes and value for money. This manifest’s itself in a relentless shift to maximise treatment and budget control closer to the patient in Primary Care. In addition there continues to be a constant state of flux and restructure of the services and infrastructure to deliver this care.

The evolving structure of the new NHS has seen a proliferation of new prescribers, influencers and key decision makers, but one common theme has been a more “corporate” approach to the development of prescribing and purchasing policies.  Whilst the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) effectively controls access to the NHS for new technologies and interventions, a relatively small number of key decision makers within PCTs and Acute Trusts effectively control access to a local market. 

Coupled with many of the internal and external challenges facing the industry this has led pharmaceutical and healthcare companies to re-evaluate their current sales model.
